Final of the Metro Tournament
Daphne vs. Chelsea, 3-2 Win – Tuesday March 26 7:00 Chelsea, Alabama
Daphne High built a 2-0 lead in the first half by controlling possession of the ball and held off Chelsea with defense that continued to deny Chelsea’s aggressive second half runs for a 3-2 win on a frigid Tuesday night.
Daphne’s Jackson Stoppa headed the ball in on a corner kick from Josh Gurvitz, during a period of heavy first-half pressure. Jackson Barber scored on short shot as Daphne pressured the goal to increase the lead to 2-0.
Chelsea cut the lead to 2-1 in the second half on a breakaway goal. Chelsea sent a long kick up field and it’s forward got behind the Trojan defense avoiding an apparent offsides call to gather in the pass, shoot and score from the middle. Levi Ehmka increased the margin back to two on a quick-hitting run down the middle past a defender and ripping a shot into the goal from about 20 yards out.
Chelsea answered, maneuvering the ball in front of Daphne’s goal, then in heavy traffic finding a seam to get off a short shot and pull within 3-2. Trojan goalkeeper Will Carpenter made a couple of impressive saves off strong Chelsea shots to preserve the win, and defenders Tyler Cook, Sam Seawell and Joe Lieb repeatedly shut down Chelsea offensive runs throughout the night.
Daphne vs. Thompson vs. Daphne, 3-1 Win – Monday March 25 6:00 Alabaster, Alabama
Levi Ehmka scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Daphne Trojans to three first-half goals in route to a 3-1 win over Thompson High School in Alabaster Monday night.
Daphne controlled the ball throughout the first half as they probed for scoring opportunities, taking a dozen shots on goal to Thompson’s one. Kelton Bailey got the Trojans on the scoreboard first. Bailey booted the ball into an empty net from short range when Thompson’s goalkeeper stopped a Daphne shot on goal but was unable to control the ball. It rolled free and Bailey was in position in front of the goal to tap it in. Bailey is one of four eighth-graders that joined the varsity after the middle school season ended last week, and the group has contributed immediately, scoring two of the varsity’s five goals over the last two games.
Ehmka increased the lead to 2-0 with an assist from Joe Lieb. Ehmka made a run down the center of the field. Lieb hit him with a crossing pass from the left sideline and Ehmka fired a shot past the goal keeper. Travis Purser scored the Trojan’s final goal. Ehmka crossed a pass to Purser who took a shot. The keeper blocked it but Purser was there to pick up the rebound and shoot again, this time into the net.
Thompson came out and controlled possession of the ball for the first 10 minutes of the second and picking up its only score of the game during that period on a Trojan miscue. Daphne had kicked the ball back to goalkeeper Will Carpenter to reorganize. When Carpenter kicked that ball up field a Warrior cut in front and intercepted the pass then kicked the ball in from the middle of the field
