There were plenty of fireworks on Tuesday night as the visiting Dacula Falcons flew into The Arena to face the Warriors of Walnut Grove. With the view of a new season on the horizon, each team looked to secure a good showing before opening night next week. Despite controlling the first 20 minutes of the game the Warriors surrendered the first goal on a nicely touched lob pass over the heads of a Warrior defense that was caught off guard and found a streaking Falcon forward who out ran the defense and bested the goalie for a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Walnut Grove would add a goal 7 minutes later as "Sweet Lew" Martin beat a Falcon defender off the dribble and crossed the ball into 6 yard area and found Holland Carmichael who flipped the ball with his back heel into the left side netting. The Warriors would take a 2-1 lead going into the half when Martin again beat 2 Falcon defenders on the left side and crossed to Darien Queen who beat an another Dacula defender and volleyed the ball into goal. The second half saw the Falcons tie the game up in the 55th minute on a nice piece of dribbling by a Dacula forward who beat two Warrior defenders and beat the goalie on a low drive into the left netting. Six minutes later in the 61st minute Carmichael struck again. This time on a beautifully placed free kick from 25 yards out. There was just enough room on the outer side of the Dacula wall as Carmichael snuck the ball past the wall and into the upper right netting of the goal for the 3-2 lead. Dacula would come right back and score off a Warrior defensive miscue and tie the game 3-3 in the 66th minute. Just two minutes later however, the Warriors would capitalize on a nice piece of ball movement and get the finish from Martin who looked the part of famous football placekicker Lew "The Toe" Groza and chipped a toe ball nicely past the Falcon goalie. With 3 seconds left in the game, the referee stopped the clock due to a foul from a Warrior defender who was not shown a card which allowed all 11 Falcons to place themselves in the penalty area for one final shot at a tie. The kick was well placed as the Warrior goalie hit the ball straight up into the air as every offensive attacker drove toward the net and put the ball into the goal for the 4-4 tie to end the game. Best of luck to the Falcons this year in the always tough region 8 5A. The Warriors will open their season Monday Feb. 13 at Archer.
