TSSAA Finalizes Districts For 2013-17

South Greene High School will officially be a member of District 1-A beginning with the 2013-14 academic/athletic calendar.
The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association met Thursday in Murfreesboro to vote in the district alignments for the next four years.
South Greene - which due to a decrease in enrollment is moving from Class AA to Class A - will join North Greene, Cloudland, Hampton, Unaka and University High in District 1.
Hampton, North Greene and South Greene will compete for a spot in the 2A playoffs during football season, while Cloudland and Unaka will vie for the 1A postseason. University does not field a football team.
"To be honest, that's where we would like to be," South Greene athletic director Terry Hoese said last week, when the proposed districts were released ahead of an official Board of Control vote.
"For one, it's closer travel for us up that way. Also, teams up there seem to travel better. One thing we were really worried about dropping from AA to A was a loss of revenue. We feel like this was the best situation for us in the move."
South Greene's departure from District 2-AA leaves that league with just six schools - Chuckey-Doak, Claiborne, Cumberland Gap, Grainger, Greeneville and West Greene.
In other area district moves, Sullivan South is dropping from Class AAA to Class AA and will be put in District 1-AA with Elizabethton, Happy Valley, Johnson County, Sullivan East, Sullivan North and Unicoi. District 1-AAA will simply lose South. District 2-AAA - comprised of Jefferson County, Morristown East, Morristown West, Cherokee, South-Doyle, Seymour, Sevier County and Cocke County - is set to remain the same.
Other actions taken by the TSSAA Board of Control Thursday
* The girls' state soccer tournament is being moved from Chattanooga to Murfreesboro, beginning with next season.
* A bid was accepted from WillowBrook Golf Course in Manchester to host the state golf tournament for four more years.
* A proposal was accepted to divide the individual state wrestling tournament into A/AA and AAA.

Greeneville had heard the talk - how this was going to be the year that University High was going to end the Devils' streak of three straight Region 1-A/AA championships.
But when the regular season title was on the line at Burley Stadium Tuesday night, it was Greeneville who walked the walk.
The trio of Martin Djikonavic, Drew Fezell and Hays Culbreth put on an offensive exhibition as the Devils rolled to a 9-2 victory to finish off a perfect Region 1-A/AA regular season. Greeneville will be the No. 1 seed when the region tournament begins next week.
"It was a very important game and we took it to another level tonight," said Djikonavic, who scored a career-best four goals in the contest. "We need to keep this up until we make it to the state (tournament)."
"First time in my life I've scored four goals, so that was exciting. But more importantly we won the (regular season championship). That's exciting. It was a fun night."
Both University High and Greeneville entered the contest undefeated in region play. The Junior Bucs finished runner-up to GHS in the final standings last year as well.
Greeneville has yet to lose a region game since dropping down from Class AAA four years ago. And the Devils sent a message Tuesday night that it will take a strong effort if a team hopes to hand them their first defeat once the postseason gets underway.
Djikonavic scored two goals in the first half and had another two shots ricochet off the bar in the ten minutes leading up to intermission. The second near-miss came with 3:30 left on the clock, when his blast from 25 yards out hit the right bar, bounced off the back of the University High
keeper and rolled just outside the net.
Djikonavic would atone for the misses in the second half, though, as both of the shots he took found the back of the net. One came on a penalty kick in the 47th minute, and the other was with just over nine minutes left.
"Martin is so unselfish, and that's the reason we were able to get him the ball in a lot of good spots," Greeneville head coach Jerry Graham said. "It was good to see him have such a solid night. We just played good team soccer tonight."
Djikonavic wasn't the only one feeling the momentum.
Culbreth scored in first-half stoppage time, when he collided with the UH keeper and another defender and the ball got free, allowing Culbreth to regroup and fire at an empty net.
Culbreth also scored with less than five minutes left in the game.
Fezell mixed in three goals in the second half to help fuel the rout. His shot from in front of the net made it 5-0 in the 52nd minute. He scored twice more over the next 14 minutes.
"It seems like when we play University High, both teams just take it up a notch," Graham said. "The important thing about this one is that we get home field advantage as long as we keep winning in the postseason."
"We feel like that is huge. We get to play in front of our home fans, which we love. They are very supportive of us. We just have to keep playing like we did tonight."
Gibbs is who UH would have played to make it to State!

The Gibbs Eagles came to Burley Stadium Saturday evening proclaiming that this would be the year that they would finally knock off Greeneville.
But by the time the game finally came to a close, talking was all the Eagles could do.
Greeneville scored two goals in the final 16 minutes of the game to pull by Gibbs 3-1 in the Class A/AA Sectional contest, marking the third straight year that GHS advanced to state by beating the Eagles at home
